With music blogging it’s hard not to fall into a comfortable niche surrounded by like-minded bloggers who are all posting similar songs. That’s why I’ve had a lot of fun with this Monday Mixer project.
Each week, one of the blogs in the group chooses a theme and everyone has to come up with songs accordingly. This week I’m hosting and I chose “Baby Makin’ Music” because I figured everyone likes to get down & dirty to different sounds and I wanted to hear what they’d choose.

This might be my favorite Daft Punk song. It borrows a bit from the “Just the Two of Us” vibe; slow, sexy, emotionally charged. How can not be in the mood when this comes on?

I hate being so obvious, but when I heard the theme was “baby makin’ music” there was just no way I could avoid this. When this track comes on, bitches get pregnant. Every. Single. Time.

When I read this week’s theme, I instantly thought about Lovage. This project, spearheaded by Nathaniel Merriweather (aka Dan the Automator), released their first and only full-length back in 2001. The album, a sexy collection of trip-hoppy songs with intertwining male and female vocals, was appropriately titled Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By… Listen to “Stoker Ace” and you’ll understand why!

Tyler, The Creator – She (ft Frank Ocean)

Odd Future’s been getting a lot of attention. Everyone has their opinion about them, which makes it easy to forget about the music. “She” by OF’s ring-leader, Tyler the Creator, features the R&B side of the L.A. collective. It’s not your typical baby making song; Frank ends the hook with “you touch yourself after hours/ ain’t no man allowed in your bedroom/ you’re sleeping alone in your bed/ but check your window, he’s at your window.” So yeah it’s a little off the beaten path, heading a kind of creepy-voyeuristic-obsessive direction. But that’s been resonating with me a lot more than a typical there-are-no-problems-I’ll-only-ever-love-you love song. Things tend to be more complicated than that. Just my take. Enjoy.

Slow and sensual. A big change up from the original. Need I say more?

I feel like the music you want to listen to while “makin’ babies” actually describes your style of love makin’. Why did I pick Sun & Moon? It has the perfect harmony of energy (that you can dance to) along with sensual lyrics. Nuff said.

Al Green – Let’s Stay Together

There really is no need to say anything about Al Green, which is perhaps not so good for a music blog. But when there’s babies to be made then there is Al Green to be played.

I could have pretty much picked any song from The Weeknd’s House of Balloons EP and still fulfilled the baby makin’ music requirement.

You shouldn’t be reading this. You should be listening to the mixtape and doing some bed-shaking…unless your partner is cool with you having a smartphone in bed and reading this…but if that’s the case, you might want to use the phone for other purposes than reading a blog…just sayin’.

This is probably the sexiest song ever created; it’s four years old and still leading the pack. While it might not be the most love-me-tender subject matter–it’s about a one night stand and a trunkful of regrets–this song uses gasps as percussion; how much hotter can you get? No hotter.

Bon Iver – Skinny Love

Ok I am not going to lie, I was just about to pick an aggressive and dirty skrillex dubstep banger for this baby making playlist but my romantic side got the best of me. While it may be one of the most popular songs from the american indie folk band Bon Iver, “Skinny Love” is a beautiful classic that is bound to start things out right. The soft acoustic strums and smooth vocals Justin Vernon will soften the heart of any partner, leaving them completely in your hands.

This song was on ?uestlove’s “Babies Making Babies” compilation album, so it’s definitely a timeless baby-making anthem. Overt S&M references long before Rihanna and Jean Claude Toran really knows how to get the women all hot and bothered: ‘…suck the dew from your breast and plant kisses in the valley of your thighs’
