Somehow or another I ended up revisiting an old Justice video I used to study back in the day from their 2006 set at I Love Techno. This clip was important to me for a couple reasons. I’m pretty sure it was this was the first place I heard “Testarossa Autodrive (SebastiAn Remix)” and the first time I heard a crowd going nuts over something like “Bongo Song.”
I liked the idea of this raw, punkish dance sound holding its own at a festival which I assumed was otherwise full of repetitive bassy house music. There weren’t many lights on stage, the focus was on Xavier shredding on the CDJS and Gaspard, who would occasionally turn a knob or pop out a CD.
My favorite part of the video is always around 3:22 where “Bongo Song” fades into “Never Be Alone,” which quickly turns into “We Are Your Friends.” I used to think the verse, “no one else will let you know the truth” and the chorus, “because we are your friends,” were two separate songs; a call and response technique that blew my mind. But even without that, I’m always impressed with Xavier’s skills on the decks, which fueled my desire to be a DJ even more.
I looked around for a download of the full set and found this (bellow). It’s not the highest quality ever but it’s a healthy 73mb worth of music. Enjoy! (tracklist in comments).
