I experienced Grimes a bit backwards.
Late one night when I was having trouble sleeping I pulled out my phone and opened up itunes mobile to look around for some new music.
Usually you can find a few hidden gems by switching up where you dig around for songs.
In this case I was checking itunes’ January chart for new indie hilights and came across Grimes’ “Genesis” single.
This was during the height of SOPA protests so I was high on the idea of supporting artists and decided to spend an impulsive buck on the mp3 based off the preview; something I’ve been training myself to get more used to this year.
After falling in love with the single I decided to check out some of her previous work.
“Damnit, she’s a fucking witch house artist” I thought to myself as I scrolled across track names like these
There’s really nothing I hate more than a genre of music which is mainly used as an accessory to an aesthetic trend.
Most of the witch house (God, just typing it makes me cringe) I’ve heard is shallow, lazy and generally boring “art.”
Luckily Grimes aka Claire Boucher has shaken free of her † and ▲ shackles and created something more dynamic; a fun and dreamy vocally driven pop single worth putting on repeat.
Good stuff. Hopefully the rest of the album is just as good.
Visions is out Feb 21 on 4AD.
“Genesis” has been made downloadable by the good people over at FACT Magazine.
